Dr. Mani was nominated by the Government of Delhi as a founder member of the Delhi Medical Council, subsequently being elected to the Executive Committee of the Council. He has also headed the DMC Committee for the protection of doctors, and championed the need of CMEs to validate medical practitioners' knowledge. He is a Visiting Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences at Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh. Besides pioneering post-graduate cardiac surgical training recognized by the National Board of the Academy of Medical Sciences, which, to this day, is one of the building blocks of Cardiac Surgery in India, Dr Mani has also initiated and actively participated in various community service activities such as St. John's Ambulance Brigade and other voluntary blood donation camps.

One of the pioneers of the 'Beating Heart Coronary Bypass Surgery' in India, which was responsible for revolutionizing the outcome of bypass surgery in terms of significantly reducing mortality and morbidity related to Coronary Surgery while reducing its cost by almost 20%, Dr. Mani has personally performed over 15000 cardiac surgeries to date both adult and pediatric. Today the portals of the majority of India's prominent Cardiac Centers stand in shining testimony to Dr. Ganesh Mani's untiring endeavors along his arduous path of high standards and affordable surgery. True to its founder, the Health Education And Research Trust (HEART) undertakes major community service initiatives and amply bears out Dr.Mani's lifelong credo of 'Excellence in Tertiary Health at Affordable Cost'.

Graduating from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi in 1969 and guided by pioneers like Dr.S.Padmavathy and Sir Rowan Nicks, Dr.Mani trained for post-doctoral training in Cardiothoracic Surgery under the well known cardiac surgeon Dr.Stanley John at Christian Medical College, Vellore - one of the pioneering institutions in Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery in India. Assisting in over 2000 cases, acquiring his M.Ch. degree in Cardiothoracic Surgery from the University of Madras (Chennai) in 1979 and membership of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in 1980, he was absorbed into the Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital at Perambur on the basis of his outstanding achievements. Here, he got the chance to work alongside the then giants of cardiac surgery in India - Dr. M.R. Girinath and Dr. K.M. Cherian, and with more than 5000 surgeries to his credit, rapidly acquired renown for his prowess as an exceptional cardiac surgeon in South India, as well as among Railway Circles all over the country. Having worked in ascending responsibilities at the Railway Headquarters Hospital till 1982, Dr Mani was selected by the Australian government for advanced training in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery under the world renowned heart surgeon Prof. Douglas Baird at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Heart Transplant training under the able guidance of Dr.Victor Chang at St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney in 1983-84. He was again selected for advanced training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery under another world renowned figure Dr.Roger Mee at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, in 1985.

In 1989, as Dr Mani was contemplating to move to Delhi, he was invited by Mr A L Batra to head and establish the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Batra Hospital and Medical Research Centre. Under his able tutelage, this institution was also recognized as a 'Center of Excellence' for the Cardiothoracic Surgical Training Program of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Working unflaggingly to bring the latest techniques in cardiac surgery to India, as well as initiating measures to reduce cardiac surgery related mortality and morbidity, Dr Mani was highly instrumental, through his path-breaking work at Batra Hospital, in significantly reducing the number of Indian patients going abroad for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. While at Batra Hospital, Dr. Mani, besides performing more than 4000 surgeries, extensively toured Northern India in order to educate both doctors and patients about the benefits and safety of cardiac surgery, simultaneously conducting numerous free health camps, as well as establishing the still-continuing Charitable Annual Camp at Alwar in tandem with the Arya Kanya Vidyalaya, Alwar.

Moving from strength to strength, Dr Mani next co-founded the Cardiac Surgical Department of the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi in 1996, and performed over 4000 surgeries, encompassing the entire spectrum - from pediatric valvular to coronary arteries, and numbering among his patients a host of dignitaries, leaders, businessmen and foreign nationals, as well as underprivileged patients (through the charitable wing of the hospital). Further, in 1997 he was invited by the Madhya Pradesh Government to commence the Open Heart Cardiac Surgical Program (which is still continuing) at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal.

Dr. Mani has consistently converted all the places he has worked at, to 'Centres of Excellence' and has been recognized by the Diplomate of Medical Education, with approval to impart training to Cardiac Surgeons. He has also been awarded the Cardiology Excellence Award 2000-2001 from the Indian Medical Association, as well as being an active Executive Fellow in the Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, the Indian College of Cardiology and the American College of Surgeons.

He is especially concerned with small children with congenital heart problems and has performed many feats correcting innumerable defects on the smallest of babies. His devotion to this cause is also because he feels that early correction can save a lifetime of misery and healthy citizens make up a healthy and productive nation. From India's standpoint, Dr. Mani considers this aspect of his contribution to the field of cardiac surgery as among the most important and fulfilling. Just a few years ago, he made Cardiac Surgery history when he performed a successful Coronary Bypass Surgery on a 12 year old boy with a birth disorder of cholesterol metabolism - possibly a first in the world for atherosclerotic coronary artery disease in childhood. Recently he operated successfully upon an 11 year old girl with a large aneurysm on the left side of the aorta, close to the coronary artery - an extremely rare condition of which only five cases have been reported in medical literature to date

As a leader in his field, he has been nominated as a member on the Medical Advisory Board of Chronic Care Foundation, a body whose mission is of reaching out to all the chronically ill by Public lectures and by establishing "Best Practices in the Hospital" and home care & thus achieving the goal of " Health for all".
